David Ciepley
Biography

David Ciepley was recently a Berggruen Fellow in the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He publishes in the fields of democratic theory, liberal theory, and corporate theory. He has held fellowships at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (Washington, DC), at the Center for Human Values (Princeton), and at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton), and spent Fall 2017 at McGill University as a Fulbright Scholar. He is the author of Liberalism in the Shadow of Totalitarianism (2006), “Beyond Public and Private: Toward a Political Theory of the Corporation” (APSR 2013), and “Is the US Government a Corporation? The Corporate Genesis of Modern Constitutionalism” (APSR 2017). His current book project, Our Corporate Civilization and its Neoliberal Crisis, recovers the corporate roots of the democratic constitutional state and analyzes the changing relationship between this state and the business corporation.
