Biography

Stephanie Rickard is a Professor at the London School of Economics. Her research focuses on international trade and negotiations. She’s currently researching offshoring and how plant closures to move abroad influence elections.

In her new book, Spending to Win, she investigates why governments selectively target economic benefits, like subsidies, to businesses. Based on interviews with government ministers and bureaucrats, as well as parliamentary records, industry publications, local media coverage, and new quantitative data, she demonstrates that economic policy can be explained by the combination of electoral institutions and economic geography.

She serves on the steering committee of the International Political Economy Society (IPES) and the editorial board of the journal International Organization.
